Part sci-fi / part documentary series about the microbiome
Director, editor & composer
Biopolis-intro the microbiome
A young scientist ventures into the human microbiome in search of answers. Biopolis is an original audio series that is part non-fiction and part science fiction.
Dutch podcastmaker Michiel van Poelgeest meets a young German scientist named Dr. Theda Bartolomaeus. She tells him about a world he had never even heard of: the microbiome: a wild, diverse and bizarre community of microbes that exists within us. A community that might be in serious trouble, he soon understands.
She also tells him about a science fiction story she wants to create, about a young scientist who shrinks down and travels into the microbiome, to try and discover the cause of the disruption, to find a hidden truth.
These two stories, over time, became one story: Biopolis - into the microbiome, an original audio series by the Max Delbrück Center. This ⅚ part series is a blend of real world research and sci-fi narration, as it consists of multiple interviews Michiel held with renowned scientists in the field of microbiology, as well chapters from the fictional story Theda and Michiel decided to co-create.
What is the microbiome? Why is it important that we understand it? Is it broken? And if so, how do we fix it?

Storytelling podcasts are a composer’s playground
In 2018 I started editing, producing and scoring podcasts. Almost immediately I fell in love with the medium because - much like film - audio documentaries can benefit greatly from original music and properly crafted sound design. To go one step further: to me storytelling podcasts are a composer’s playground.
